Initial unemployment claims surge by 42,000

(Oct. 18, 2012) -- Initial U.S. unemployment insurance claims bounced 46,000 to a higher-than-expected 388,000 in the week ending Oct. 13, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. A spokesperson for the Labor Department noted that state-level administrative issues have distorted the data in recent weeks.
