May retail sales rise strongly

"Expectations of a sizable rise in May sales had been based on indications of a sharp rise in unit auto sales in the month," said Ferley. "Sales at motor vehicle and parts dealerships rose by a strong 2.0 percent in May following a 0.7 percent rise in April, although an even stronger gain had been implied by the unit auto sales numbers."
