Initial jobless claims rose last week

(May 21, 2015) -- The four-week moving average of initial claims, which attempts to smooth out some of the weekly volatility in the measure, fell to 266,250 from 271,750 in the previous week. This marked the lowest moving average for initial claims since April 2000. Continuing claims for the week ending May 9, fell by 12,000 to 2,211,000.

Americans spending more, but not on wants

(May 21, 2015) -- Americans continue to spend more on things they need, but not on things they want. All five categories of discretionary purchases -- leisure activities, clothing, consumer electronics, dining out and travel -- continue to have negative net spending with substantially more Americans saying they are spending less than last year than those who say they are spending more.
