Woman describes ‘horrible night’ at Tenn. campground

(July 6, 2012) -- For Carole Cooper, Thursday began as a sweltering summer day on the mountain. It ended in chaos, confusion, injury and death. She was one of several people trapped at Abrams Creek campground when Thursday’s storms descended on Blount County, the Daily Times reported.  Cooper administered first aid to an injured 7-year-old girl; she gave emergency personnel the use of her Chevy Tahoe and its OnStar communications; she provided comfort and opened her cabin for temporary shelter.

N.C. man struck by lightning at campground

(July 6, 2012) -- Mark Gilbert was camping with his family at Steele Creek Park in Burke County yesterday when a strong line of storms moved in and lightning struck him to the ground, WSOC-TV reported. "It was just a loud clap of thunder, and then I was just getting up off the ground," he said.

B.C. campgrounds declares emergency

(July 6, 2012) -- After the Windermere Creek burst its banks June 30 trapping RVs in a concoction of icy cold, mud-filled water, Shadybrook Campground has declared a state of emergency, the Columbia Valley Pioneer reported.  “I can’t put a dollar value on the damage costs from this flood because they are so enormous,” said Mike DuBois, owner of Shadybrook Resort. “This has just devastated my businesses.”
