Canadian retail sales decline; U.S. jobless claims rise

(June 21, 2012) -- Canadian retail sales in April unexpectedly declined 0.5 percent in the month, which more than reversed the 0.4 percent increase recorded in March, RBC Economics reported today. In the United States, the four-week moving average of initial unemployment claims posted its fourth consecutive increase and represents the highest four-week moving average of claims since early December 2011.

Bruce Jackson to head sales at Ally Financial

(June 21, 2012) --Ally Financial today announced the appointment of Bruce Jackson to the position of national sales director. He will be responsible for identifying growth opportunities to build the company’s diversified dealer relationships in the U.S. market. His duties also include expanding Ally's business in the RV market. Ed Arienti, Ally's director of finance for the RV business, will report to Jackson.

Common themes emerge in government proclamations

(June 21, 2012) -- The president and nearly every governor have declared June 2012 as Great Outdoors Month. The proclamations are unique, but certain themes are pervasive and in 2012, the economic importance of recreation is the key emerging theme. More than 40 proclamations emphasize the role outdoor recreation plays in mental and physical health. Support for conservation efforts is referenced in 37 of the documents, and the importance of the outdoors for kids and families is mentioned in 22. Volunteerism is praised in 19.
