Record 72.2M Expected to Travel Domestically Over July 4th

WASHINGTON, D.C. – AAA projects 72.2 million people will travel at least 50 miles or more from home over the Independence Day holiday period from Saturday, June 28 to Sunday, July 6, according to AAA. This year’s domestic travel forecast is an increase of 1.7 million travelers compared to last year and 7 million more than in 2019. AAA’s Independence Day forecast includes two weekends instead of one to better reflect the flow of holiday travelers.

“Summertime is one of the busiest travel seasons of the year, and July 4th is one of the most popular times to get away,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel. “Following Memorial Day’s record forecast, AAA is seeing strong demand for road trips and air travel over Independence Day week. With the holiday falling on a Friday, travelers have the option of making it a long weekend or taking the entire week to make memories with family and friends.”

Independence Day Travelers by Mode of Transportation

By Car: AAA projects 61.6 million people will travel by car, a 2.2% increase over last year, and the highest volume on record. This Independence Day holiday period is expected to see an additional 1.3 million road travelers compared to 2024. AAA recommends getting routine vehicle maintenance ahead of your trip and packing an emergency kit. Last July 4th week, AAA responded to nearly 700,000 emergency roadside assistance calls for issues like dead batteries and flat tires, plus people locking themselves out of their car or running out of gas.

Drivers are seeing some increases at the pump, but summer gas prices are still the lowest they’ve been since 2021. This year, the price of crude oil has kept gas prices on the lower side. The Israel Iran conflict has driven up the price of oil in recent days but not dramatically. Escalation and duration of the conflict are two factors to watch. Weather is also a wild card. The Atlantic hurricane season is underway, and NOAA predicts a 60% chance of an above-normal season. Storms along the Gulf Coast can affect oil refineries and disrupt fuel deliveries, leading to a temporary increase in gas prices.

For travelers who are renting cars, AAA car rental partner Hertz says Thursday, July 3rd is expected to be the busiest day to pick up vehicles. Some of the top destinations based on advanced bookings are also on AAA’s list of most popular places to visit over July 4th: Orlando, Denver, Boston, Oahu, and Seattle. Hertz says most drivers are looking to rent SUVs and midsize sedans.

By Air: The number of people traveling by air is also projected to set a new record. AAA expects 5.84 million travelers will fly to their destinations; that’s 8% of all Independence Day travelers.  This year’s projection is a 1.4% increase over the previous record set last Independence Day week of 5.76 million air travelers.

According to AAA data, which is based on what travelers paid when they booked their July 4th trips, a roundtrip domestic flight is averaging $810, 4% more expensive than last year. When booking last-minute flights for summer trips, consider flying on weekdays like Tuesdays or Wednesdays for the best deals.

By Other Modes: Travel by other modes is expected to grow by 7.4% over last year. AAA projects 4.78 million people will travel by bus, train, or cruise. This year’s number is just shy of the 2019 record of 4.79 million. Cruising is driving the popularity of this category, particularly this time of year, when Alaska cruise season is in full swing.

Discovery Channel’s ‘RV There Yet?’ to Feature Elkhart, Ind.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A new episode of the show “RV There Yet?” is airing on the Discovery Channel this Saturday, June 21, and it is featuring a recent stop in Elkhart, Ind. Here’s what “RV There Yet” says about the episode that airs at 8:30 a.m., Saturday on Discovery and on YouTube:

We finally make it to the RV Capital of the World in this week’s episode of RV There Yet? TV, and what an impressive community! They may be most recognized for their RV contributions, but this town has been the epicenter for many of inventions, industries, and innovations for decades. Did you know Alka-Seltzer was invented at Miles Laboratory in Elkhart, Indiana, in the 1930s? See? That’s just one example.

If you ask any one of us on the crew about the culinary scene they have in Elkhart, we’d all agree it’s one of the best we’ve had on our travels this entire season. Plus, the Riverwalk and downtown areas are fun and fantastic to stroll. The museums, culture, gardens, tulips – oh, my word! – the tulips were in bloom all over the city!

Here’s a few of our stops in Elkhart you will see on this episode:

Brass Elk Brewery – Local restaurant and brewery. Talk about tasty!! From the light and crisp “Porch Beer” to the deep, dry stout called “Brewer’s Breakfast” the beer was definitely something to write home about (or mention in your blog). They also had a killer menu with some familiar favorites but with their very own twist on it. Their crab cakes were amazing – all crab, the BBQ burger and fries (cooked in beef tallow) was another favorite, the Brussels Sprouts were fried, drizzled with a creamy sriracha sauce, topped with bacon and candied pecans – Oh My Word! To top off our already stuffed bellies, they bring out their homemade bread pudding in a cast iron skillet topped with fresh peach ice cream. Stop!!

Meet the Mayor – We were graciously invited to meet Elkhart’s Mayor, Rod Roberson. What a great visit, too! He’s tall, he’s charming, he grew up in Elkhart, he’s raising his family in Elkhart, and loves his city. Mayor Rod was the perfect choice to kick off our stay and send us on our way to explore more.

Hall of Heroes Super Hero Museum – Whether you’re a DC or Marvel fan, Villain or Superhero, Batman or Wonder Woman, Ironman or Captain American . . . it’s all there to interact with and reminisce. This museum is the only Superhero and comic book museum in the world preserving and covering the entire 80 year history of superheroes in comics, toys, film and animation. They have one of the largest collections of superhero memorabilia, art, and comics in the U.S. We may or may not have had a difficult time removing Patrice from Batgirl’s motorbike . . .

RV Technical Institute – The reason we decided to head to Elkhart in the first place, was to visit the RVTI. The people and curriculum behind the institute have nailed it! They are solving one of the dominant challenges the industry has faced over the years (due to the increase in RVing popularity) and that is service, certified service technicians, and how to train more. We got to spend the day at the school’s Elkhart location, in the lab and classroom, and walk through with the President, Recruitment Manager, and a Master Certified Technical Trainer. Not only are they providing more certified technicians for the RV industry, they are opening the minds and eyes of students all over the country to trades they may not have had the opportunity to learn about. Good stuff and glad we got to visit!

RV/MH Hall of Fame – Talk about a chunk of history being preserved! From one of the first known “RV’s” in 1913, to a “telescoping apartment” (basically the first slideout) from 1916, to Mae West’s movie trailer, and then there was the RV from Breaking Bad (sans the meth lab). All super cool to walk through and learn about the history and evolution of the RV industry.

The people of Elkhart are just who you think would be in a city that has led the country in many industries – smart, down to earth, hospitable, and ready to roll up their sleeves and get it done. We left our time in Elkhart with a few more friendships we look forward to revisiting the next time we’re back in Indiana.

General RV Cuts Ribbon at South Weber, Utah, Supercenter

SOUTH WEBER, Utah – General RV Center, the nation’s largest family-owned RV dealer, and home to two dealerships in Utah, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week to celebrate its newest Supercenter in South Weber, according to a press release.

General RV Center’s ownership and leadership teams were joined by nearly 80 others from the South Weber community including Mayor Rod Westbroek, city council members and firefighters as well as RV manufacturers for a ceremony and a tour of its new facility. The event also was a kick-off to the dealership’s Summer Blowout sales event for the Supercenter.

“It took almost two years to get from a shovel in the ground to what you guys see here today. It was a lot of time, energy and effort to get here.  I want to thank everybody who had a part in that,” said CEO of General RV and third-generation owner Loren Baidas at Wednesday’s event. “We’re blessed to be able to build such a beautiful facility in a great community and being welcomed by South Weber.”

Located approximately 30 miles north of Salt Lake City, the 65,000-square-foot South Weber Supercenter is General RV’s second location in the state and offers an extensive inventory of more than 500 new and used RVs, including motorhomes, fifth-wheels and travel trailers. The facility also features 30 service bays — including a dedicated body shop — designed to support all types of RV maintenance and repair needs.

“South Weber is my home,” said Paxton Jensen, Operations Manager for the South Weber Supercenter who talked about the legacy of his family in the RV industry in Utah as well as the Baidas family’s impact and support. “South Weber (and this Supercenter) to me represents effort and dedication. It’s been one of those hauls to get here that makes you grateful for those people around you because they build you up.”

Since its official opening earlier this year, the South Weber Supercenter has created more than 80 sales, finance, parts, technicians, office managers and customer service professional jobs in the area. The construction of the Supercenter, which began in 2023, also was responsible for bringing in dozens of construction jobs to the South Weber region.

“We’re so happy to have General RV here in South Weber,” said South Weber Mayor Rod Westbroek at Wednesday’s ribbon cutting ceremony. “South Weber is a great community, and I think they’ll reap great benefits from being here. We look forward to a good future for you (General RV) and South Weber.”

General RV Center owns and operates 23 Supercenters across 10 states (Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah and Virginia). The company opened its first Utah dealership in Draper in 2009 and has consistently been named the state’s top RV dealer by Statistical Surveys Inc.

“We’ll do whatever we can to make the journey of buying an RV and being in this community pleasurable,” said Robert Jensen, General Manager of General RV’s Draper Supercenter and longtime RV industry leader who was instrumental in the development of the South Weber Supercenter. “We (General RV) bring a lot of economic development into our community. And I guarantee you; we’re in for good days.”

RVDA Launches Annual Dealer Satisfaction Index Survey

FAIRFAX, Va. – The national RV Dealers Association (RVDA) has launched the 2025 Dealer Satisfaction Index (DSI) survey, according to a release from the RVDA.

When rating their brands/manufacturers, RVDA asks dealers to express their level of satisfaction on four core issues:

  • Reliability/quality
  • Parts Support
  • Warranty Support
  • Sales Support

U.S. and Canadian dealers will have until September 10th to rate the manufacturers/brands whose products they sell.

“The DSI is a confidential survey measuring dealers’ level of satisfaction with their manufacturers in areas of vital interest to dealers,” said RVDA President Phil Ingrassia. “It is more important than ever for dealers to provide feedback to manufacturers through the DSI survey as the industry works to improve the overall customer experience with RV travel.”

This is the 31st year RVDA has conducted the DSI survey and is one of the tools the association uses to improve dealer-manufacturer relations. To access the online survey, dealers can click here.

RVDA is the national association representing RV retailers in the U.S. The association members include RV dealers, RV rental operators, and RV aftermarket sales and service locations. Performance Brokerage Promotes Windish RV Acquisitions

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following transaction was first announced by RVBusiness on May 13 (See: “Windish RV Center Acquires Airstream of Utah, Wyoming”).

IRVINE, Calif. – Performance Brokerage Services, one of North America’s highest volume dealership brokerage firms, today announced in a press release the sale of Airstream of Utah in West Valley City, Utah and Airstream of Wyoming in Etna, Wyoming from the Decker family to Windish RV Center.

Airstream of Utah and Airstream of Wyoming were founded by Dennis and Laura Decker. Dennis developed a passion for adventure and the outdoors growing up in Jackson, Wyo. At 30, he opened an RV dealership in Cody, Wyo., which quickly became the state’s second largest RV dealership, receiving numerous awards for outstanding customer service. After several successful years, Dennis sold the dealership to join a startup technology company in Utah.

Later, as he and his wife, Laura, transitioned to being empty nesters, Dennis became interested in acquiring an Airstream trailer. Discovering that Utah lacked an Airstream dealership, he contacted Airstream’s corporate office in Jackson Center, Ohio. Following their discussions, he and Laura were awarded the license to become the exclusive Airstream dealer in Utah. They then assembled a team that included their three sons, two daughters-in-law, a family friend, and skilled Airstream-certified technicians to launch Airstream of Utah in 2017. In September 2022, Dennis and Laura opened Airstream of Wyoming. Adjacent to Airstream of Wyoming, Dennis and Laura own Grand Buffalo RV Resort, which they will continue to own and operate.

“Each person that came to our two dealerships, Airstream of Utah and Airstream of Wyoming, entered as a guest and left as family. We are most proud of the relationships and friendships we made along this incredible journey,” said Dennis Decker.

“Finding the perfect buyer was of paramount importance. The Windish RV team met all the criteria we were looking for to take over the businesses and relationships we worked so hard to develop. Airstream of Utah and Airstream of Wyoming continue to be family-owned and cared for by the Windish family. This could not make us happier, as we feel the RV lifestyle is all about bringing families together,” said Laura Decker.

After the sale, Laura Decker shared, “When we made the difficult decision to sell our two dealerships, Performance Brokerage Services continually impressed us. They looked for the best partner for us to assist in what could be a very stressful transition. Jesse Stopnitzky of Performance Brokerage Services did just what we were hoping, as he patiently guided us through the sale of our dealerships. Jesse was an incredible liaison, assisting both the buyers and sellers, making this transaction seamless for all parties involved.”

Jesse Stopnitzky

Over the last five years, Performance Brokerage Services has advised on the sale of nearly 400 dealerships, making it the highest volume dealership brokerage firm in North America. Jesse Stopnitzky, Co-Owner and Director of the RV Division for Performance Brokerage Services was the exclusive sell-side advisor for this transaction.

Jesse Stopnitzky commented, “It was an honor to represent the Decker family in the sale of their two Airstream dealerships. The Airstream brand is a symbol of adventure and innovation, and the Deckers built a first-class business recognized by Airstream as a Five Rivet dealer. Being entrusted to manage these lifetime milestones for our clients is a responsibility that we take seriously, and we are proud to have facilitated a seamless and rewarding transition for both the Decker family and Windish RV Center. Both organizations exemplified true integrity and good faith negotiations throughout the process. We would like to wish the Deckers well on their next adventure, and tremendous success to Windish RV Center on their first acquisition!”

Windish RV Center, a family-owned business established in 1965, operates three multi-brand dealerships in Colorado and an Airstream-exclusive dealership in Denver. The acquisition of Airstream of Utah and Airstream of Wyoming is a significant milestone for Windish RV Center as it marks the company’s first acquisition and its expansion beyond Colorado.

Dennis and Laura Decker were represented by Helmut Gerlach and Nicole Arnold at Buckley Fine Law.
