Hotels’ Effect on Glamping & a Hidden Shift in Hospitality

Editor’s Note: This column, written by Whitney Scott (founder of Walden & A Bit of Whit), was first published by the American Glamping Association on its LinkedIn page and is posted here with permission.

For years, everyone assumed the great hotel invasion of outdoor hospitality would be all about acquisitions—a game of big money buyouts where mom-and-pop glamping sites and brands would eventually cash out to the Hiltons and Marriotts of the world either through portfolio plays or direct acquisition. The thinking was simple: the hotels would wait for the sector to prove itself, then swoop in, offering operators and investors their golden parachutes. But what if the game isn’t quite so black and white? What if Marriotts and Hiltons don’t want to buy your business? What if they want your customers first?

The outdoor industry has long been wary of outsiders with the idea that a larger force would come in, disrupt the balance, and reshape the market. The fear was always that it would be Airbnb, Expedia, or another OTA that would claim dominance, absorbing independent operators into their ecosystem and make them dependent on their channel distribution – with significant margin takes. But perhaps the real threat is less obvious.  Perhaps it’s more subtle than that – coming quietly, cloaked in the familiar comfort of loyalty points and brand trust.. A wolf in sheep’s clothing, to own the traveler’s decision before they even consider entering an outdoor hospitality path.

As much reported, in June Hilton inked a loyalty partnership with AutoCamp, and Marriott quietly snatched up Postcard Cabins, formerly Getaway, in December. These deals aren’t just small expansions—they’re stakes in the ground. The industry has been buzzing that the time has arrived. They aren’t just dipping a toe into outdoor hospitality; they’re anchoring themselves in it. The question isn’t just how far they’ll go—but whether the entire game board has already started to tilt in their favor.

Let’s take a step back and look at an interesting piece of data around hotel loyalty programs. As reported by Skift recently, over the past six years, hotel loyalty memberships have surged by 69%, with major brands adding over 500 million new members. Marriott Bonvoy leads the pack with 228 million members, but Hilton Honors is closing in fast, growing by an astounding 147% since 2018 to reach 210 million members. At this rate, Hilton could overtake Marriott’s membership count by 2026, reshaping the balance of power in the hotel industry.

Loyalty programs aren’t just about rewarding repeat guests; they are powerful tools for retaining and expanding direct bookings via conditioning and habits.  The more locations, offerings, and partnerships a program has, the more likely it is to keep travelers within its ecosystem and create patterns of behavior in travel planning.  For members, it’s about ease, perks, and familiarity—why book elsewhere when you already have status, points, and trusted options within your program? For the hotel brands, it’s about reducing dependence on OTAs and ensuring that their travelers stay within their portfolio.

Is this where the expansion into outdoor hospitality comes into play?

Knaus Tabbert Sees ‘Significant Progress’ on Realignment

JANDELSBRUNN, Germany – Knaus Tabbert is undergoing an intensive process of stabilization and realignment under the leadership of the new Management Board, according to a press release from the European RV manufacturer. In recent months, a comprehensive package of measures has been initiated to strengthen the company’s competitiveness and stability. This package includes significant steps to improve production efficiency, sales-related activities and measures to support dealers, as well as significant cost reductions.

From model year 2026 on, the release continued, the company will increase its production efficiency by simplifying the chassis portfolio, which should also have a positive impact on costs. Knaus Tabbert is optimizing the model portfolio for 2026 to eliminate product versions with insufficient demand and focus more on high‐demand categories. The company has also conducted intensive negotiations with its suppliers in recent months in order to achieve improved price and delivery conditions. In addition, cooperation with suppliers whose products or services did not provide sufficient added value for customers was terminated.

Targeted marketing campaigns and a strong showing at the CMT in Stuttgart and other trade fairs attracted a high level of customer attention, the release stated. Targeted incentives were also introduced to further promote sales. These include attractive discounts at trade fairs and additional sales campaigns to support dealers. As a result, the vehicle stock has been reduced by around 2,000 units since October 2024, within the company and at dealers combined.

Knaus Tabbert CEO Wim de Pundert

The management team is now receiving additional support for the ongoing realignment, according to the release. Jochen Hein, an experienced industry expert, should join the management team as Chief Operating Officer on May 1, 2025. He brings a broad range of experience in managing medium-sized companies and implementing operational excellence initiatives. Among other things, he was a long-standing shareholder and Senior Partner of the Conmoto Consulting Group and spent eight years as technical Managing Director of Hymer GmbH. As Director for Digitalization, he also played a key role in developing the digitalization strategy of the Erwin Hymer Group.

Knaus Tabbert has also appointed Matjaž Grm, a renowned industry expert, as a consultant. The former Chief Sales Officer of Adria Mobil brings with him many years of experience in the caravanning industry and has already proven his expertise by successfully managing a high‐performance product development and sales and marketing organization.

These additions to the existing management team will strengthen Knaus Tabbert’s progress in its strategic realignment under the motto “back to our roots,‟ according to the release. The aim is to adapt the product portfolio more consistently to customer demand, increase production efficiency and focus on the quality of existing products.

“Knaus Tabbert is undergoing a comprehensive transformation process in which we are setting clear priorities: Customer focus, efficiency and quality,” stated CEO Wim de Pundert. “With the optimization of our model portfolio and targeted measures in sales and marketing, we are creating the basis for a successful future. Knaus Tabbert stands for innovation and quality. We will continue to focus on these values and our strengths as a traditional manufacturer of leisure vehicles with decades of experience together with our dealers and partners in the future.”

Structural adjustments for a stable future

After the entire caravanning industry has experienced a boom during the coronavirus pandemic and production has increased significantly in line with this extraordinary demand, manufacturers’ and dealers’ inventories have increased in the context of the current economic situation in many European countries. Knaus Tabbert’s structures must continue to be adapted to the currently normalized but stable demand. This has involved temporary production breaks or short‐time working at various locations, budget cuts in administration and the discontinuation of inefficient development projects. These include the termination of the “KNAUS CASCAN” van or the launch of the “XPERIAN‟ brand.

In January 2025, necessary personnel reductions were also implemented. Among other things, a social plan and corresponding agreements for the reduction in headcount at the Jandelsbrunn site were negotiated and signed in January 2025. As a result of the necessary structural adjustments at all four locations, the headcount was reduced by around 15 percent in the period from October 2024 to February 2025.

“We have taken decisive steps in recent months and initiated the necessary optimization measures to get Knaus Tabbert back on track,” stated CFO Radim Sevcik. “These measures, some of which were cost‐intensive, had a correspondingly negative impact on the earnings and financial figures for the 2024 financial year. However, these measures form the basis for sustainable positive development from the 2025 financial year onwards. The current progress and the feedback from our partners show that we are on the right track.”

Positive outlook for the 2025 financial year

In the 2025 financial year, the Management Board expects revenue of around one billion euros (EUR 1,000 million). Earnings power, expressed in terms of the adjusted EBITDA margin, is expected to be in the range of 5.0% to 6.5%. The implementation of various measures will have a significant impact on achieving this.

Newmar is ‘Building on Legacy’ at 2025 Dealer Meeting

Newmar President Casey Tubman

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Newmar Corp. executives unveiled its 2026 model year lineup of Class A and Super C motorhomes, and at the same time said the company is poised to continue “Building on Our Legacy” – the event’s theme – through quality, customer experience and innovation.

President Casey Tubman said the Nappanee, Ind.-based, gas- and diesel-powered motorized manufacturer enjoyed market share gains in every segment the OEM has an entry, the Dutch Star was the No. 1 selling diesel motorhome for the third year in a row, and that Newmar will continue to keep its production pace in step with the retail market.

The company also on Tuesday premiered a redesigned King Aire and the all-new 600hp Summit Aire – its fourth Super C model – and was set to unveil another new product today.

“We want to be the best in quality without question,” Tubman said. “No one should be able to question it. It should be just known and you can see it.

“The second thing is, we want to be the best in customer service. And again, we’re already known for our customer service, so we’re proud of that, but we can always take it to the next level,” he continued.

2011 DAYTONA 500 champion Trevor Bayne, left, with Newmar VP Sales Matt Ellinger

“The third thing is product innovations,” Tubman added. “Newmar has been first to the industry with several things, and that’s something we pride ourselves on. So, as we go forward, how do we bring the first of something in the industry for market? We’re going to show you some of those again this week.”

Concluding this evening with an awards ceremony, Newmar is hosting its dealer partners at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo. The event includes presentations from Tubman, along with Executive Team members VP Sales Matt Ellinger, VP Engineering JP LaPorte, VP Marketing & Strategy Ryan Buurtstra and VP Customer Experience Simone Silva, who was to deliver her session this morning.

In addition, 2011 DAYTONA 500 champion Trevor Bayne, who serves as Driver Consultant for LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, shared how lessons learned on the race track can be applied to the business world. Bayne is a NASCAR veteran widely recognized for having been the youngest driver ever to win the DAYTONA 500 in the iconic No. 21 for Wood Brothers Racing and for his work as an analyst at FOX Sports.

Newmar VP Sales Matt Ellinger

In his presentation, Ellinger laid out many of the changes, upgrades and new floorplans to the 2026 model year lineup. Among those were:

  • Many new color, cabinetry and other interior decor and exterior graphic options.
  • Woven vinyl in slideout flooring, replacing carpeting.
  • Onyx package available on all models.
  • Artisan Series graphics on select models for truly one-of-a-kind coaches.
  • Victron components on all models.
  • Control system from American Technology Components, Elkhart, Ind.
  • A more subtle “Refined” décor option on the King Aire to complement the classic “Regal” selection.
  • Supreme Aire SE and the Supreme Aire XT are to be built on the Freightliner Cascadia chassis.

The Artisan Series deserves additional mention, as it “reflects the overwhelming desire to own a truly customizable coach that reflects our customer’s unique tastes, and that cannot be duplicated,” said Ellinger. “Not only can customers select this option, but dealers can as well. They can select from an exclusive catalog of Artisan series graphics that will be forever archived. Making this coach truly one of one.”

“If you have a motorized mentality, we want you to lean into Newmar today and this week. We’re a proven winner in this space. And guess what? We’re only going to get better,” Ellinger concluded.

Newmar VP Marketing & Strategy Ryan Buurtstra

For his part, Buurstra shared some target audience research conducted with IPSOS – the same agency that produced the recent Go RVing RV Owner Demographic Study – that is informing many of Newmar’s decisions going forward, one of those being people who ascribe to “Stealth Wealth,” which means they prefer understated luxury. The study also helped to identify the consumer profile that is within the OEM’s wheelhouse, but also pinpointed other segments that represent growth opportunities.

“Newmar will continue to lead in our current strongholds. That’s not going to change. But we are also focused on expanding into new customers and new segments while remaining true to the Newmar brand,” Buurstra said.

LaPorte used his presentation to introduce himself – he succeeded the late Paul White, who died unexpectedly last year – as well as share his excitement for the future of Newmar

Newmar VP Engineering JP LaPorte

“For a company to be great, there’s two fundamental pillars that have to exist,” he said. “You have to have great product and you have to have a great brand. Newmar has both. That is the No. 1 thing that attracted me and made me want to come here. The No. 2 thing is the amount of just unbridled opportunity that’s out there for the product. If you look at the technologies that are out there in the different spaces, we just have a huge growth opportunity and it’s exciting.”

In addition to the awards ceremony tonight, the second day will include sessions that highlight how Newmar is “driving customer loyalty through consumer experience,” from VP Customer Experience Simone Silva, as well as a presentation on how tariff and other regulatory updates are impacting the company.

RV Melds VW Camper Van, Trailer into New ‘Van Life’ Unit

Many an RV buyer has had to navigate the decision between camper van and small travel trailer, according to an article at NewAtlas.com.

French startup Bivoak hopes to eliminate that process of pro/con compromise by bringing together the advantages of both into a single vessel fittingly called the Bivan. The garageable four-sleeper trailer isn’t tied to the lifespan of a single vehicle but offers a layout and feature set derived directly from classic Volkswagen pop-up camper vans. It’s a new style of ‘van life for a new breed of roadway voyager.

A camper van is fully contained and easier to maneuver on highway and backway than a vehicle towing a trailer.

On the other hand, living space-to-total vehicle size is limited in a van as compared to a caravan that’s free to dedicate its entire interior to camping, something that’s especially important when trying to fit in as many family members as possible. And it’s advantageous to be able to unhitch and leave the trailer behind to reserve your campsite while venturing out during the day.

Randy Isaacson’s Family Gifts $2,500 to OHI Scholarships

OHI officials said the organization is proud to honor the life and legacy of Randy Isaacson, a dedicated leader and visionary in the Outdoor Hospitality Industry, whose contributions have left a lasting impact on the community. Randy’s “unwavering belief in the power of education and his commitment to helping others succeed” will now be carried forward through a generous donation from his family to the OHI Foundation Scholarship Fund, according to a release.

During the 2025 Wisconsin Campground Owners Association (WACO) Convention, Randy’s family was presented with Commercial Recreation Specialists (CRS)’s inaugural Inspire the Human Spirit Award by Ron Romens, CEO and founder of CRS, in recognition of Randy’s profound influence on the Outdoor Hospitality Industry. The award celebrates individuals who embody CRS’s mission of Inspiring the Human Spirit Through Recreation, a mission Randy lived out through nearly 40 years of innovation and leadership.

Randy’s wife, Theresa, and daughters, Rachel and Marley, accepted the award and a $5,000 honor. In tribute to Randy’s passion for education and industry growth, the Isaacson family has chosen to donate $2,500 of the award to the OHI Foundation, supporting two scholarships for OHI’s George O’Leary National School of Outdoor Hospitality.

“Our family felt compelled to donate $2,500 toward an OHI National School Scholarship in memory of my father, Randy Isaacson,” said Rachel Isaacson. “He was a dreamer and a doer—he thrived on the excitement of what’s yet to come. He passionately believed in the power of education, often preaching the importance of staying relevant, embracing industry trends, and never stopping the pursuit of knowledge. Through this scholarship, we hope to inspire others to follow in his footsteps and continue learning, growing, and shaping the future.”

Randy was an active member of the OHI Business Forum, where his guidance and insight helped shape industry standards and foster connections among campground owners and operators. His passionate work in campground financing and development, including building and owning the highly decorated Jellystone Park™ in Caledonia and Bear Paw Beach, transformed the outdoor hospitality landscape and helped countless others achieve their dreams.

“Randy’s legacy is truly unique. He understood the business side of outdoor hospitality as a banker, experienced it firsthand as a camper, and transformed it as a campground owner and developer,” said Paul Bambei, OHI’s president and CEO. “He saw the full picture of the industry and used that understanding to guide others toward success. We are incredibly honored by the Isaacson family’s generosity and their commitment to supporting the next generation of leaders in outdoor hospitality.”

The scholarships in Randy’s memory will help campground owners and operators gain valuable education and training through the George O’Leary National School of Outdoor Hospitality, ensuring that his spirit of innovation and community-building continues to thrive for years to come.
