Newmar’s Tubman: ‘Freedom Aire’ Expands Luxury Brand

Newmar President Casey Tubman

Newmar certainly caught the attention of its dealer base – if not the industry at large – with this week’s introduction during its dealer show held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., of the Freedom Aire Compact C motorhome, the company’s first foray beyond its current Class A and Super C offerings.

Built on a Mercedes-Benz 4500 chassis, the Freedom Aire debuts with two floorplans – a twin-bed model as well as the 2515 prototype on display, highlighted by a slideout on the driver’s side offering a king-size Murphy bed over a dinette. Every inch of the coach is optimized to enhance livability and offers six distinctive exterior finishes. The optional solar package includes roof-mounted panels as well as Newmar’s first-ever external and movable solar panel option, increasing solar capacity by up to three times. This advancement empowers owners to venture further off-grid with greater independence.

Following the Freedom Aire’s reveal, Newmar President Casey Tubman spoke with RVBusiness about what the new product and new segment means for the company, the Nappanee, Ind.-based subsidiary of Winnebago Industries.

RVBusiness: Casey, we’re standing here and looking at your brand new, all-new Freedom Aire motorhome, which you are calling a “Compact C.”

Tubman: That’s correct. Some people reference B-Plus, but there’s no such thing as that class. We call it a Compact C.

RVBusiness: Newmar is known as a manufacturer of Class A motorhomes and, more recently, Super C’s. So, what does this new product and new segment means for Newmar as a company?

Tubman: Newmar has a great brand name for 50-plus years now – even in the past when we were producing fifth-wheels. We eventually moved into diesels and we became known as a diesel brand or a Class A brand. And, while we’ve brought in Super C’s and dabbled our toe in the water a couple of years ago, this year, we said, “We want to become known as a luxury brand.” Doesn’t matter if it’s a Class A, Class B, Class C, Compact C – whatever it is. We eventually want to have an offering for everyone that wants a luxury Newmar experience, best quality in the industry, best craftsmanship, all those industry firsts that we talk about. You buy a Newmar, that’s what you get.

RVBusiness: So, Let’s talk about some of the highlights of the Freedom Aire. Your VP of Sales, Matt Ellinger, said it has “Diesel DNA.”

Tubman: I call it “Newmar DNA,” but he likes to say “Diesel DNA.”

RVBusiness: From the side-opening baggage doors in the basement storage, to the integrated rooftop awning, to the rear caps – the whole thing truly looks like a diesel pusher, but on a 25-foot Mercedes Benz 4500 Sprinter chassis.

Tubman: And on the inside, because of the limited space, we wanted to make sure we made the most of it. But having the Italian leather theater seats with the full power recline, adjustable headrest – things of that nature – make it super comfortable.

I was joking with my wife the other day. When you get in those seats, it’s business class versus a coach class. When you’re flying, it’s business class, you have a flip-out tray, it’s real nice, it’s heavy duty. The comfort is all there, and you can recline back and take a nap. We wanted to do things like that. It’s a 25-foot unit and we put a king-size bed in there. Unheard of.

But we know our customers, and again, one in five of our Newmar owners are talking about downsizing because they’re aging out. We want to keep them in the brand; they want to stay in the brand. I had many people come to us at our rallies asking, “When are you going to bring something?” Or, “Can I go into one of your sister brands and still stay a member of your club?” And we just wanted to bring this product so that they would have that.

Something else we pride ourselves with is our craftsmanship. A lot of times we’ll say the Amish craftsmanship of Nappanee, Indiana. This has wood cabinets, hard surface countertops. It’s again, Newmar inside. We didn’t want to compromise on what the customer is buying. We worked on different trade-offs in weight because that’s always the question on these. And again, we’re going to end up right around that 750-to-800 pounds of carrying capacity, which when you add two people and all their stuff for camping, that’s about what it takes. And again, I would say that’s if not the highest, it’s probably the second highest in the industry for this one.

RVBusiness: And, as you said earlier, while what we’re looking at is a prototype and changes should be expected, but this will be a 2026 model and you’re expecting to go into production with it sometime this summer?

Tubman: This is a 2026 production model. It will go to production over the summer and then we will ramp up as the summer goes and be full running in the fall. We have two floorplans right now that we’re working on. And again, multiple exteriors that you can see there, including an available Onyx package.

One other thing I should mention is, it’s a Compact C, but what you probably don’t realize is those walls are built like all our other walls, 16-inch on center, aluminum stud walls, fully insulated, again, fiberglass cap on the back, fiberglass cap on the front and integrated awnings, you mentioned that, but it really is the Newmar construction here that you’re seeing, which again, no one else does

Newmar VP Sales Matt Ellinger offers an overview of the Freedom Aire.

RVBusiness: The Sprinter chassis was intentional, obviously.

Tubman: We wanted the Mercedes chassis because it represents a brand similar to Newmar. And it was a perfect fit for us. The 4,500 gives us an extra thousand pounds of carrying capacity for that customer.

Again, special things like that bunk doesn’t have a nursing home curtain to cover you up when you’re sleeping. It’s a nice blind or shade as we have in our other units. That’s what you’ll find in there. And what people talk about is those bunks get high. We pump AC into that bunk area separately where a lot of people just pump it to the end of the run and point it that way. We ducted it into the actual cab.

What else? We made sure the shower, that bathroom, porcelain toilet, glass saying, it feels like a Newmar. And the shower is big enough for our engineering lead, JP LaPorte, who is 6-foot-5. And then we put (VP Marketing & Strategy) Ryan Buursrta, the 6-foot-4 guy, up in the bunk because we want to make sure it’s usable for these people.

RVBusiness: You sound pretty pumped.

Tubman: Yes, we’re very excited. This is the first of what we want to do, expanding our brand to more areas. We want people to know Newmar is a luxury brand and this is the way we do that. Again, it’s the first of many.

Steiner Technologies Hires VP Ganshorn Amid Solid Year

LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Steiner Technologies Inc., a creative manufacturer and supplier of RV and marine componentry based in Lafayette has added Elkhart-area executive Chris Ganshorn to its management team as vice president of sales during what is amounting to a growth year for the innovative firm.

Ganshorn last served as director of engineering for Quality Engineered Services (QES), a 200-employee supplier specializing in wire harness assembly in Syracuse, Ind., and, prior to that, as an employee of Polar Kraft Boat, Atwood Mobile Products and LCI Industries.

“With over 22 years of industry experience, Chris’s mission is to expand the engineering and innovative products offered by Steiner Technologies within the RV and marine industry,” reported Steiner Equity Partner Don DeWitt, whose been affiliated with the 33-year-old company since 2005. “Steiner Technologies employs a unique and revolutionary business model offering a wide diversification of technologies within its existing product lines while also being capable of rapidly developing new and innovative products.

“Additionally, Steiner Technologies benefits from a robust and worldwide manufacturing base to support product delivery, quality and overall value,” said DeWitt, adding that Steiner’s current business is rather strong despite the relatively soft state of today’s recreational vehicle marketplace due to the new products it has cultivated recently.

“Yes, our core business obviously went down because of the OEM market in general, but our new products made up for that downturn and then some,” DeWitt told RVB. “Some of those new products came from new clients, but the bulk were generated by existing customers.”

Indeed, as DeWitt points out, 50-employee Steiner promotes an inventive gameplan through which it assists its varied client base in custom designing and developing their own “game-changing solutions” in terms of products from initial sketches to polished prototypes.

“That’s what we do,” said DeWitt, who has cultivated a number of patents over the years. “We partner with an OEM and we design and engineer a product or a solution for that customer. We put their name on it. They generate a brand around it. And since we engineer it, we retain the manufacturing rights and we go to market together essentially.

“And if we engineer a product for a customer, that’s their product,” added DeWitt. “We don’t sell it to anybody else, even though we get asked all the time to buy a product that we have. We’re loyal to a fault and the agreement is if we innovate it for a client like Keystone or others, that’s exclusively their product.”

DeWitt adds that Steiner’s novel approach to product development within the RV industry at times involves manufacturing a limited number of products itself and at times by others in locales as remote as China, Vietnam and Malaysia. “We’ve gained a lot of traction with our business model with brands like (Airxcel’s) RV Products, Cleer Vision and Velarium,” he explained. “I mean, that business model works because a lot of the RV guys don’t have the innovation resources. They’re busy building RVs, not truly engaging on the business side of things.”

“We are an innovative OEM supplier,” added DeWitt, whose firm also assists clients in supply chain management, instrumentation, transportation, packaging and GPS tracking with the continued support of his son, Josh DeWitt, who serves as vice president of engineering. “So, while we don’t market our own products, we brand, design and engineer products for our OEM partners.”

Meanwhile, DeWitt added, Steiner Technologies recently cancelled its distribution partnership with Structure Sales Inc. and owner Wade Seaberg. “We are appreciative of the results and relationships fostered over the past seven-year partnership,” said DeWitt.

Squatters Break into RV Storage Lot, Take Over 50 Campers

From KCAL News, the CBS television affiliate in Los Angeles: A luxury RV company is trying to evict a group of squatters who took over a storage lot of campers worth at least $40,000. Laurie Perez reports.

A luxury RV company is trying to evict a group of squatters who took over a storage lot of campers in the city of Industry.

“We’ve noticed that several of the trailers have been burning,” worker Marilyn Martinez said. “There’s homeless here sometimes late at night. They’re coming in and out.”

Martinez, who works near the lot, said a city of squatters started taking over the overflow storage area months ago. Since then, they’ve piled up massive mounds of trash and debris. The company, Black Series RV, said trespassers are now living in at least 50 campers, which are worth anywhere between $40,000 and $100,000.

Russell Wegge, Burlington RV Superstore Founder, Passes

Russell Wegge

The RV Dealers Association (RVDA) announced today (March 27) that Russell Wegge, founder of longtime RVDA member dealership Burlington RV Superstore in Wisconsin, passed away on Friday, March 21, at the age of 92.

Russ and his wife Pat raised five children and founded Burlington Camping and LP Gas Service. There they started out by renting folding camping trailers from their front yard. The business grew with the popularity of the camping lifestyle. They eventually changed the name to Burlington Camping & Travel, and then to Burlington RV Superstore, and through several expansions, became the largest RV dealership in Wisconsin.

The dealership drew camping enthusiasts from all over Wisconsin and northern Illinois. It was only fitting that he and Pat would create the Jayco Big Birds Camping Club. In 2006, after outgrowing the property in Burlington, the company moved to its current location off Highway 20 and I-94 in Sturtevant, Wisc. After 58 years in business, it was sold in 2021 to Lazydays RV, and was since recently acquired by Camping World.

Russ was helpful in the formation of the Burlington Little League and sponsored a Little League team, the “Campers.” He enjoyed attending nearly every game while his grandsons played on the team.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Alzheimer’s Association, Immaculate Conception St. Mary Parish, Aurora at Home Hospice, or to the Burlington Lions Club.

A Mass of Christian burial for Russell will be held on Friday, April 25 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Church, Burlington. A gathering will follow in Heim Hall to share stories and memories of Russ. A private burial will take place in St. Charles Parish Cemetery.

New Escapees Owner Joel Holland Reflects on ’25 Escapade

Joel Holland

EDITOR’S NOTE: RVBusiness partnered with Harvest Hosts CEO Joel Holland to have him write the following report from the 2025 Escapade, the annual gathering of the Escapees RV Owners club. Harvest Hosts, the membership-based organization that matches RVers with campsites on private landowners, acquired Escapees in August of 2024, and the 2025 Escapade represented the first significant event since that transaction.

What an unforgettable week we just had at Escapade 2025 in Tucson, Ariz.! With the theme Let’s Fiesta, we transformed the Pima County Fairgrounds into a vibrant celebration of RV life, community and adventure.

This was the first Escapade since Escapees joined the Harvest Hosts family, and the fiesta theme could not have been more fitting. From the moment I arrived, I felt the energy, warmth and excitement that makes this community so special. Whether it was dancing at the lively evening entertainment, sharing stories over tacos, or engaging in insightful conversations about the future of Escapees, this event was truly one for the books.

Joel Holland with his young “co-pilot.”

One of my favorite parts of the week? Jumping into my golf cart, picking up attendees, and giving them rides. It was the perfect way to meet so many Escapees members, hear their incredible RVing stories, and gather valuable feedback on what the members want to see in this amazing community going forward. The friendship, laughter and camaraderie throughout the week were a true reminder of why we are so excited to have Escapees as part of the Harvest Hosts family.

As an experienced RVer, I thought I knew it all — until I attended the seminars. The topics ranged from solar power and boondocking strategies to RV safety and travel planning. There was truly something for every kind of RVer. After a full day of learning, I made sure to reward myself by partaking in the legendary Escapade happy hours – because what’s a fiesta without a little celebration?

One of the biggest surprises of the week? Escapees Got Talent. I had a front row seat to the show and was blown away by how many talented members we have in this community! The enthusiasm and creativity on display made for one of the most memorable nights of the event.

We also had Harvest Hosts representatives on-site, assisting members with the new website and helping them sign up for our All-Access Plan — a new membership option designed to bring even more value to Escapees members by bundling Escapees, Harvest Hosts and Boondockers Welcome into one seamless experience. This plan offers RVers the best of both worlds — unique camping experiences combined with the most supportive RV community out there. The launch of All-Access in early March brought the Escapees family to over 70,000 active memberships, making it the largest social RV club in the world. And we’re just getting started!

A major highlight of the event was our Escapees & Harvest Hosts update session, where we shared our exciting plans for the future of Escapees. As I told the audience at Escapade, our goal is simple: to honor and carry on (founder) Kay Peterson’s vision. We are deeply committed to preserving everything that makes this community incredible while expanding benefits, enhancing events and making membership even more rewarding. Following the session, we held a Q&A where thoughtful questions and valuable feedback flowed freely. There were also smaller listening sessions where members could share their thoughts on the past, present, and future of Escapees. These conversations will play a key role in ensuring the bright future of the club.

I want to personally thank our incredible exhibitors, sponsors, and attendees who make Escapees such a success. I also want to give a special callout to the amazing volunteers that help bring this event to life. The event would not have been possible without your participation. From the vendors showcasing innovative RV products to the tireless volunteers who kept everything running smoothly – thank you!

Don’t miss out on Escapade 2026, which will be held in Fryeburg, Maine, in June 2026. Get ready for lobster, scenic views, and unforgettable memories. We can’t wait to see you there!

Viva Escapees!
