OHI Seeks Park Owners for Credit Card Fee Advocacy Event

OHI is inviting RV park and campground owners and operators from key states to join its Government Affairs Team in Washington, D.C., this February for an important advocacy event. The delegation will meet with U.S. Senators to discuss how credit card fees are impacting the outdoor hospitality industry, according to a press release.

This Fly-In, held in partnership with the Merchant Payments Coalition (MPC), will focus on building support for the Credit Card Competition Act, a bill that aims to introduce competition into the credit card swipe fees marketplace and provide significant savings for small businesses like RV parks and campgrounds.

OHI is seeking campground owners, operators and managers from across the country to share their personal stories with representatives in D.C. about how credit card fees are affecting their businesses and advocate for the broader outdoor hospitality industry. Interested campground owners and operators are encouraged to apply by sharing their interests and experiences here.

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Nov. 19, Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) emphasized the importance of this legislation:

“…help is on the way (for small business owners). In July of 2022, I joined my colleague Senator Roger Marshall to introduce the bipartisan Credit Card Competition Act. The Credit Card Competition Act would break the Visa-Mastercard stranglehold on the market by requiring only the largest banks—those with more than $100 billion in assets—to enable two networks on their cards, and one must be a company other than Visa or Mastercard. In this way, small businesses would finally have a real choice.”

Visa and Mastercard’s market dominance allows them to impose some of the highest credit card fees globally, totaling over $100 billion in 2023. These fees burden small, family-owned businesses like OHI members and are ultimately passed on to consumers through higher prices for goods and services.

“In advocating for the Credit Card Competition Act, our goal is to support legislation that promotes fairness and helps our industry thrive,” said OHI President and CEO Paul Bambei. “As the national voice of the Outdoor Hospitality Industry, we’re committed to representing our members’ interests in Washington. We encourage campground owners to join us and make a powerful impact on this critical issue.”

Participants will be reimbursed for flights, hotel stays and transportation to and from the airport and hotel in D.C. Attendees will only be responsible for their food and beverage expenses.

From Cabins to Glamping, Hotel Chains Lean into Outdoors

Last month, Marriott acquired nature-focused Postcard Cabins at the same time that it forged a long-term agreement with Trailborn, an outdoors-oriented boutique hotel brand, according to Travel Weekly.

Both moves are part of Marriott’s plan to launch an outdoors-focused collection later this year, centered on upscale and upper-upscale accommodations that cater to travelers seeking nature-immersive experiences.

Postcard Cabins, which launched in 2015 and previously operated under the name Getaway, specializes in “tiny cabin” accommodations within a two-hour drive from major U.S. metro areas. It has more than 1,200 cabins across 29 locations, including the Catskills in New York, Shenandoah in Virginia and Running Springs in California.

Trailborn debuted in late 2023 aiming to serve guests seeking adventure with hotels near popular nature-focused destinations such as Rocky Mountain National Park and the Grand Canyon.

Marriott isn’t alone in betting big on outdoor hospitality. Over the past year, other heavyweights have rushed to capture a piece of the growing segment.

It’s a trend that Heather Dietrick, chief media officer for Outside Interactive, the parent company of Outside magazine, said is likely to accelerate.

“We’ll see more and more hotel brands get into this space,” she said. “And I think we’ll see the big hotel chains [continuing to] dip their toes into this space and facilitate more outdoor adventures for their guests.”

Soaring Eagle Campers Now a ‘Proud Member’ of RVIA

AERIE

WAKARUSA, Ind. – Soaring Eagle Campers, located in Wakarusa, Indiana, announces that it has been approved for RV Manufacturer Membership by the RV Industry Association (RVIA), effective Jan. 1, 2025.

“We are excited to announce that we have been approved for membership by RVIA and look forward to this next stage in our development as a company,” shared Scott Tuttle, a partner at Soaring Eagle Campers. “We will proudly wear the RVIA brand on our campers.  Joining and being approved by RVIA will allow us more opportunities for exposure for our unique campers including opening us up to some retail shows that were restricted to RVIA Certification.”

With their new AERIE model having full amenities and systems, the company also wanted customers and dealers to be assured that were building their campers to the highest standards of excellence, as monitored and determined by RVIA.

Soaring Eagle Campers has been building all-aluminum and composite constructed truck campers since 2022.  While the recent release of the AERIE model (designed for ¾ ton trucks and larger) has attracted a lot of publicity for the company, including receiving acclaim and awards from industry publications, Tuttle reports that the majority of their models are more minimalistic, designed specifically for the popular half-ton truck market.

“We were very intentional with our design of our ADLAR models to make sure that they not only fit in half-ton trucks, but more importantly they ride well in them without the need for expensive aftermarket suspension assist products,” Tuttle said.

Soaring Eagle also has models built specifically for the smaller (quarter ton) truck market which includes the popular Tacoma, Ranger, and Gladiator trucks.

ADLAR

Scott Bradshaw, another partner at Soaring Eagle Campers, added, “While the AERIE model is opening up new doors of opportunity for us in the mainstream truck camper market, we remain focused on attracting new customers to the RVing lifestyle with our ADLAR and OV-X overland style campers.  Our goal is to provide the best possible value proposition we can in the entry level camping market and we accomplish that by building our campers with the best materials possible and taking the time to build them right.”

Soaring Eagle Campers now has over 40 dealer locations across the United States and Canada, and the company reports they are looking to increase that number in 2025 as more dealers discover the opportunities that entry level truck campers provide them.   “One thing that has been fun is seeing dealers come on board who previously had not only never sold truck campers, but who avoided them, and having them experience success with our models,” shared Tuttle.  “We keep it simple and easy for both the consumer and the dealer and we have proven the market is ripe for campers like these.  Having the RVIA label on them now is going to help us even more as we continue to harvest customers from the tent camping world.”
