Celebration of Life Set for Industry Veteran Peter Recchio

Peter J Recchio, 75, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, according to his obituary by Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home in Elkhart, Ind.

Peter was a lifelong resident of Elkhart born on Sept. 15, 1950, to the late Nicholas and Rosemary Recchio. He graduated from Elkhart High School with the Class of 1968 and later attended Indiana University in Bloomington Indiana.

After college Peter began a successful 30-plus year career in the recreational vehicle industry working for multiple manufacturers in sales and management. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, he started two companies of his own over his career, American Traveler and Ameri-Camp. Peter developed relationships with co-workers, dealers and suppliers, some of whom remained his closest, lifelong friends. He was a mentor to many and was passionate about cultivating talent, believing that the right character, a positive attitude and hard work could make anything happen.

Peter will be remembered by Dawn, his wife of 30 years, his children Nicholas (Jennifer) Recchio, Angie (Cory White) Recchio and his stepchildren Sonny Robinson, Andrew (Marsha) Robinson and Luke Robinson. There was simply no other role he cherished more in life than that of proud Papa to Grace and Brady Robinson, Giada White, Olivia Recchio and Logan and Lilyana Robinson. He and Dawn would be first in line to babysit, make trips to museums and zoos, and be each grandchild’s biggest fan. Peter could tell stories for hours about his Italian American upbringing, one he shared with his little sister Patti (Chris) Witman. He felt fortunate to have grown up surrounded by loving grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

In his later years, he and Dawn opened two stores in downtown Elkhart, The Black Crow on Main and Dwellings. Peter loved interacting with shoppers, vendors and the other downtown merchants. Outside of his professional life, Peter was an avid sports fan, perpetual optimist and loyal friend. He and Dawn shared a passion for history. He was a true patriot, always proud of his county and its values. Peter lived by many mantras, but the one that rises above them all is “God, Family, Country.”

Peter will be deeply missed, but his memory will be kept alive by those who loved him. A celebration of his life will take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, with visitation being held from 11 a.m. until the hour of the service at 1 p.m., all at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Peter will be laid to rest in St. Vincent Cemetery in Elkhart.

Memorial contributions in memory of Peter may be made to the Council on Aging of Elkhart County, 131 Tyler St., Suite A, Elkhart, IN 46516.

RV Filled with Two Dozen Snakes Hit by Box Truck in N.C.

Early this morning, just past midnight, a large box truck rear-ended an RV – filled with more than two dozen snakes – heading from South Carolina to Pennsylvania on Interstate 95 in Wilson County, according to a report by WRAL News, which covers the Raleigh, Durham and Fayetteville markets in North Carolina.

Inside the RV were five people, 28 snakes, two tortoises, five Bearded Dragons, two dogs and one cat.

“In 19 years, I’ve never seen anything like this,” a North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper told WRAL News.

At least one of the snakes was a small, highly venomous viper, which became loose in the RV during the crash. The owner was able to catch the snake prior to EMS workers arriving.

No one in the RV was hurt; all of the animals survived.

50 RVs Hit by Trees in Storm at Camground in Washington

LAKE STEVENS, Wash. — Since surviving Tuesday’s severe windstorm, Karen Foley has been living in her car and with friends, according to reporting by Seattle-based NBC affiliate KING.

“It was horrible. I heard at least six trees fall around me,” she says. “By then, it was too late and too scary to leave.”

Now, all she wants to do is go home, but she can’t. “I still can’t get in,” she says. “I just stopped over there and asked if I can walk to my site and they said no.”

The Lake Connor Park RV Campground, where Karen and about 1,500 others live up to six months of the year, remains shut down.

Video taken by Brad Thompson, a member of the private park, shows just a fraction of the destruction.

“It looks like a war zone,” Thompson says, his camera capturing images of toppled trees and crushed campers.

At least 50 RV’s and campers were crushed by more than 200 trees — some of them 200 feet tall and 5 feet across.

Currently, no one is being allowed into the park.

RVIA Applauds Introduction of ‘America The Beautiful Act’

The RV Industry Association (RVIA), among others, is declaring its support for the bipartisan America the Beautiful Act, which was introduced by Senators Steve Daines (R-MT), Angus King (I-ME), Mark Warner (D-VA), and Kevin Cramer (R-ND). This Act would reauthorize the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund for another eight years and ensure additional funding for public land deferred maintenance, according to an RVIA News & Insights report

The Legacy Restoration Fund was established by the bipartisan Great American Outdoors Act, which was signed in 2020 and invested $9.5 billion of nontaxpayer funds into campground modernization and deferred maintenance on public lands, ensuring safe and adequate access. It is the largest investment in our public lands in over a century.

The America the Beautiful Act would continue and expand upon the objectives set forth by the Great American Outdoors Act, which will expire in 2025.

Craig Kirby

Among other initiatives, the America the Beautiful Act would increase funding from $1.9 billion to $2 billion per year; allow next year’s projects to move forward under a Continuing Resolution; and bolster the ability for public donations to the funds.

“The RV Industry Association applauds the introduction of the America the Beautiful Act and thanks Senators Daines, King, Warner, and Cramer for championing this legislation,” says RV Industry Association President and CEO Craig Kirby. “This extended investment in our public lands is important, as it would allow RVers and other outdoor recreation enthusiasts to continue to access safe, maintained, and enhanced outdoor spaces. We urge Congress to pass this legislation so that the great outdoors can be cherished for generations to come.”

Kent Ebersole

Also lending its support was the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), whose president, Kent Ebersole, released the following statement:

“Record numbers of Americans are visiting our public lands each year, and we have a duty to the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts to ensure we leave these places better than we found them,” said Kent Ebersole, President of Outdoor Industry Association. “OIA and its members applaud this bipartisan effort by Senators King, Daines, Cramer, and Warner to reauthorize the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund and take care of the infrastructure backlog across our public lands. There is no better return on investment than protecting these places that Americans have treasured for generations.”
