Route 66 Dealers Urged to Leverage Shared Strengths

Rob Merrill

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – There’s no hiding the fact that Route 66 RV Network dealers tend to be a strongly independent bunch.

But likewise, they know the power of teamwork and partnership as they try to compete with mega-dealers through the strength of shared risks and rewards with other dealers who have joined their ranks after being recommended to the board of directors.

That teamwork and overcoming challenges was a strong emphasis during Tuesday morning’s Opening Session of the 2024 Route 66 Rally at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs.

Co-founder Rob Merrill urged members not to dwell on challenges or be discouraged by obstacles that arise in their business paths. He said those who rise above become stronger through adversity.

“This is a great time to grow,” he said. “We don’t learn when we’re coasting downhill and everything is going our way. Challenges translate into opportunities.”

He also reminded members that they aren’t facing the challenges alone, thanks to the strength and value of the other network members who are on their side.

During the session he outlined a number of resources that can assist dealers, including new methods of improving fixed ops and warranty administration.

Other programs that can help dealers include a new F&I menu, digital marketing and an employee benefit plan that offers cost savings and can improve employee satisfaction through health care solutions.

But if any dealers needed some real-life encouragement in overcoming obstacles, that came during the keynote speech from Second Lt. Melissa Stockwell, who on April 15, 2004, became the first female member of the U.S. Army to lose a limb in combat.

Melissa Stockwell

“The lesson I began to learn that day was, ‘How do you handle an unforeseen tragedy,” she told the crowd.

Stockwell had been an ROTC student at the University of Colorado at Boulder when the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, occurred. She said she knew her life would change when she graduated.

She was sent to active duty in Iraq commanding a small group and was riding in the back of a military vehicle with that group on patrol when an improvised explosive device went off as the vehicle entered an underpass.

She was the only one severely injured, but it wasn’t in her nature to give up on life because of the loss of her leg.

“I had choices,” she said. “I looked at myself and I thought, ‘Holy cow I’m lucky.”

During her time in recovery in the military hospital, she met people such as Tom Hanks and Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne. She also met presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush.

She launched the next phase of her life, which she called Melissa Stockwell 2.0, with a prosthetic leg she calls Little Leg.

Since then, she has participated in numerous Paralympic games and, rather than mourning her loss, she celebrates the day of her injury with what she calls Happy Birthday Little Leg.

“I was able to tap into the potential I always had,” she said. “You just have to start by believing in yourself.

“By choosing to live, you wake up knowing the sun will come up,” she continued. “Rise up and come into the light.”

Rob Merrill, left, and members of the ride Digital team with their Dave Francis Distinguished Partner Award.

Down to Business

To finish the session, Merrill announced the winner of the Dave Francis Distinguished Partner Award.

Merrill said Route 66 leadership was hesitant to honor Ride Digital with the award because it is a part of the network. But the advisory board insisted, and in fact voted unanimously for Ride Digital.

Merrill said that, although initially hesitant, he was gratified that the members hold Ride Digital in such high regard, as it is a program that had been requested by dealers several years ago.

Also during the session, new members were recognized including Miller’s RV in Louisiana; Royal Coach RV Sales in California; A to Z RV Center in Florida; Zabukovich RV in Colorado; Bobby Combs RV Center with locations in Arizona, Idaho and Oregon, and County Line Campers in Mississippi.

RVBusiness Top 50 Dealer Awards Sponsor Profile: Airxcel

EDITOR’S NOTE: Now in its 14th year, the RVBusiness Top 50 program celebrates those North American RV dealerships that, in the eyes of an esteemed panel of independent judges, best exemplifies dealer excellence in customer and community service. Winning dealers will be recognized during a presentation Nov. 13 during the RV Dealers Convention/Expo at Paris Las Vegas.

The Top 50 program is made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of the following organizations: Airxcel Inc., Brown & Brown Insurance, Cummins Inc., GE Appliances, Genesis Products, Northpoint Commercial Finance, NTP-STAG, Performance Brokerage Services, Protective Asset Protection, RV Trader, and Wells Fargo.

RVBusiness will publish a profile of each Top 50 sponsor leading up to the RV Dealers Convention/Expo.

Airxcel Inc.

Airxcel’s sales tagline is: “Better Brands, Better Experiences.”

That succinct description understandably just scratches the surface when attempting to communicate the breadth of the company’s offerings and the quality that goes into all of its products, according to Piar Adams, Airxcel vice president of marketing, aftermarket and international sales.

“Airxcel oversees 15 of the most well-known brands in the RV industry. From heating and air conditioning to interior and exterior systems, all products under the Airxcel umbrella are highly engineered to deliver stress-free customer experiences,” he says.

The Wichita, Kansas-based company’s premium brands include Aqua-Hot, CAN, Clear Vision Windows, Cleer Vision Doors, Cleer Vision Tempered Glass, Coleman-Mach, Dicor Products, Elkhart Composites, Maxxair, MCD Innovations, Suburban, United Shade, and Vixen Composites. Notably, Airxcel late last year introduced two new brands: InVision and Velarium.

InVision supplies a variety of residential-style RV appliances, including microwaves, refrigerators, ranges and range hoods, available in stainless-steel or black finishes, as well as washers, dryers and small personal appliances. Velarium provides a full range of awning products, including 12-volt models, slide toppers, box awnings, replacement canopies, and awning accessories.

Adams says Airxcel launched its InVision and Velarium product lines, both of which are located in Elkhart, Indiana, in response to requests from RV manufacturers, but he says the brands also are finding success on the aftermarket side of the business. And to continue to support its dealer partners, Adams notes that Airxcel offers a variety of online and in-person product training opportunities for RV technicians, as well a variety of merchandising materials including store displays.

“We pride ourselves on the comprehensive support we provide dealers before, during and after the sale,” he says. “With the number of premium brands we bring to the table, we’re proud to deliver more selling opportunities, better aftermarket support, and product expertise when dealers need it. This is a distinction that we believe drives sales and increases trust between our partners and their customers.”

Adams says Airxcel is a proud sponsor of the RVBusiness Top 50 Dealer Awards because the awards recognizing top-performing retailers reflect the company’s own values of being a premium brand that delivers superior service.

“We think it’s a unique program that has grown its prestige. And it’s something that I know dealers really value, being recognized as a top 50 dealership,” he says. “We are honored to sponsor the event because it aligns with our values and desires, to continually find new and innovative ways to serve and engage with consumers to elevate the RV lifestyle.”

Carolina Campgrounds Continue Recovery from Hurricane

Damage from Hurricane Helene has forced the closure of 16 campgrounds – numbers are changing daily as parks reopen – in the mountains of western North Carolina, according to Dee Witting, executive director of the Carolinas Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (CARVC).

But even though two thirds of CARVC’s mountain campgrounds remain open, tourists have been avoiding the area, dealing North Carolina’s entire mountain region a devastating economic blow during the peak of the fall foliage season.

“This is the height of the fall foliage season and people are not traveling anywhere to the western North Carolina mountains,” Witting said, noting that the mountains are famed not only for their striking fall colors, but their popular fall festivals and fun family activities, such as apple picking.

The 42-site Linville Falls Campground, RV Park & Cabins in Linville Falls, N.C. is one park that was forced to close early for the season as a result of Helene.

“We were fully booked for October. It was going to be a great October,” said Marla Snead, who co-owns and operates Linville Falls Campground with her husband, Kenny. Situated at an elevation of 3,500 feet, their park is just one quarter mile away from Mile Marker 317 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is famous for its fall foliage.

But Helene toppled somewhere “between 88 and 100 trees” across the campground, including pines, oaks, tulip trees, hickories and maples, Snead said. The fallen trees not only blocked roadways and campsites, but damaged some of the park’s cabins, the park office and bathhouse. The park’s pavilion was also destroyed during the storm.

“The ground was so soaked that it loosened the roots. In some of the fallen trees, the root ball came up, while others broke with the wind,” Snead said, noting that many trees that are now leaning into other trees will have to be taken down for safety reasons.

When WCM caught up with the Sneads on Monday, their power had just been restored. “We went 17 days without electricity,” Snead said. “We got our Internet back with the (restoration of power). But we still don’t have landline phone service.”

The Sneads survived the preceding 17 days by relying on their 7,500-watt generator, which provided enough power to run their refrigerator and TV. But because the Sneads rely on well water, the loss of power also shut down their well pump. “The worst thing was having to carry water to flush the toilet,” Snead said.

While Linville Falls Campground had planned to remain open until Nov. 11, the Sneads decided to keep their park closed after Helene because they didn’t know how long it would take to find tree trimmers and other crews to help them clean up and reopen. They had tree trimmers working at their campground when WCM caught up with them on Monday.

Despite the damage, the Sneads consider themselves fortunate. “Yes, we’ve had all this damage, but our house isn’t damaged,” Snead said. “We can rebuild from this and we will reopen as usual in April.”

Many other people across the mountains of western North Carolina suffered far greater losses. “One of my good friends lost her house and her car. So many homes are gone,” Snead said, citing the unprecedented floods that submerged entire communities in the mountain areas of western North Carolina.

“This wasn’t a part of the country where you thought about flood insurance,” Snead said, let alone hurricanes.

Witting said campgrounds in mountain communities in South Carolina also suffered damage as a result of Helene, but their damage was generally light compared to what happened in North Carolina.

“They didn’t have damage (in South Carolina) to the extent that they can’t reopen,” Witting said. “They are pretty much fully operational.”

Several campgrounds that are owned and operated by Spacious Skies Campgrounds, LLC were initially affected by Helene, but all but one have since resumed near-normal operations, according to Ali Rasmussen, the company’s CEO. These include:

Spacious Skies Bear Den in Spruce Pine, N.C.: This park remains closed as a result of Helene, but restoration efforts are underway. “On all fronts, we feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude that no Cosmic Crew or campers were injured, and that most of the property damage that occurred was ours,” Rasmussen said. “Our small but mighty team has already begun the hard work to restore the campground. Everyone in the area is taking it day by day, but the swift response from relief efforts from the federal and local levels has been very encouraging.”

Spacious Skies Hidden Creek in Marion, N.C.: Operations at this park are almost back to normal. “Our team has been hosting both relief workers, displaced campers, and our usual October guest population in harmony,” Rasmussen said, adding, “On their off time, many team members have been generously donating their time and efforts to aiding the community.”

Spacious Skies Peach Haven in Gaffney, S.C.: Operations are almost back to normal at this park. “Several campers have assisted with clean up on their own campsites, which was not necessary but much very much appreciated, and it showcases the warmth and caring of the camping community,” Rasmussen said. “Otherwise, we are welcoming our October campers, as well as actively selling our new winter and summer seasonal packages.”

Meanwhile, Toby O’Rourke, president and CEO of Billings, Mont.-based Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA), the Asheville East KOA Holiday and Jonesborough / Cherokee NF KOA Journey will remain closed for the foreseeable future. “We are working closely with our campground owners, managers, and local emergency service agencies to provide support and resources as they navigate the recovery process during this time,” O’Rourke said.

Witting said CARVC is monitoring relief efforts across the Carolinas and is working with its lobbyists and OHI to identify funding sources that can help private parks that suffered damage as a result of Helene.
