THOR, Harbinger Collaboration Delivers First Hybrid Class A

ELKHART, Ind. – THOR Industries Inc. (NYSE: THO) reinforced its position as an RV industry innovation leader by unveiling the world’s first hybrid Class A motorhome, the THOR Test Vehicle, according to a press release from the company.

The vehicle is built on an electric vehicle (EV) platform developed by EV manufacturer Harbinger. THOR and Harbinger collaborated to integrate a low-emissions gasoline range extender that can recharge the electric battery system, delivering an estimated 500 miles of range. RVs utilizing the hybrid platform will be commercially available in 2025 from the THOR family of companies and are expected to qualify as a Near-Zero Emission Vehicle (NZEV) under the Advanced Clean Truck legislation, adopted by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

“Electrification will play a central role in the future of mobility, including RVing,” said THOR Industries President and CEO Bob Martin. “This first-of-its-kind hybrid platform and our ongoing collaboration with Harbinger are reinforcing THOR’s leadership in this segment and creating major points of product differentiation for our family of companies.”

THOR’s Test Vehicle is a demonstration hybrid RV constructed on a Harbinger platform, which was purpose-built for the unique range requirements of the RV industry, exclusively for THOR. This is the first electrified chassis explicitly designed to power Class A motorhomes and was designed to alleviate range anxiety and deliver the ultimate in travel freedom and sustainability, according to the release.

The hybrid chassis is powered by a 140-kWh battery pack, a low-emissions gasoline range extender that recharges the battery and solar rooftop. The platform’s 800-volt electrical architecture allows for rapid charging at DC Fast Charger locations, which facilitates more time on the road. The batteries can also be charged at traditional campsites, via the range extender, and solar power, whether on the road or off-grid camping.

The hybrid platform can also serve as a backup home power source and could one day allow owners to sell power stored in the vehicle back to the grid.

The Test Vehicle’s electric powertrain delivers excellent acceleration and torque, offering up to twice the torque of a diesel engine, for confident highway driving on mountain roads and through rough terrain.

The platform’s design innovations go beyond the powertrain. Harbinger’s chassis includes all major vehicle systems of an electric vehicle, including drivetrain, high voltage battery system, steering, brakes, and more. Its double-wishbone front suspension, steer-by-wire system, and class-leading Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) features provide a safe, smooth ride and excellent handling, even in a large vehicle, the release stated.

“We founded Harbinger with a mission to modernize the medium-duty vehicle industry with our world-class electric chassis,” said Harbinger CEO and Co-Founder John Harris. “Our collaboration with THOR and their family of companies allows us to help advance the RV sector and lay the groundwork for products that will enhance the RVing experience.”

The THOR Test Vehicle is available for dealer test drives on THOR’s RV Experience Track at the Elkhart Dealer Open House, the largest dealer event in North America, starting today (Sept. 23) in Elkhart, Ind. RV dealers from across the continent will have the opportunity to experience the future of RVing and help guide the path to market for this exclusive product.

The THOR-Harbinger partnership and the world’s first hybrid Class A platform will truly allow RVers to Go Everywhere. Stay Anywhere, the release stated.

AAA: Gas Price Decline Slowing, But Likely Not Stopping

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The national average for a gallon of gas dipped a mere two cents since last week to $3.22. Gas prices had been falling by more than twice as much recently, but the arrival of Hurricane Francine to the Gulf Coast created some temporary issues for nearby oil production and refining. The national average cost for public EV charging, however, held steady, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).

“Gasoline prices have been plunging lately, and it is not uncommon to see them take a bit of a breather during hurricane season,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “Gasoline demand and oil costs are low, so pump prices may soon resume a slow descent. There are 14 states with averages below $3 a gallon, and several more may soon follow.”

With an estimated 1.2 million AAA members living in households with one or more electric vehicles, AAA tracks the average kilowatt-per-hour cost for all levels of public charging by state. Today’s national average for a kilowatt of electricity at a public charging station is 35 cents.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand increased slightly last week from 8.47 million b/d to 8.77. Meanwhile, total domestic gasoline stocks remained flat at 221.6 million barrels, while gasoline production increased last week, averaging 9.7 million barrels per day. Lackluster gasoline demand and low oil costs will likely keep pump prices sliding.

Today’s national average for a gallon of gas is $3.22, 19 cents less than a month ago and 66 cents less than a year ago.

Oil Market Dynamics

At the close of Wednesday’s formal trading session, WTI fell by 28 cents to settle at $70.91 a barrel. The EIA reports that crude oil inventories decreased by 1.6 million barrels from the previous week. At 417.5 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are about 4% below the five-year average for this time of year.

RVIA: Huntington’s Marcus Palmer ‘Dedicated to RV Industry’

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a News & Insights report by the RV Industry Association RVIA).

Marcus Palmer, the RV Vertical Commercial Leader for Huntington Distribution Finance, is passionate about his work in the RV industry.

Born in Baltimore MD, Marcus spent most of his childhood in the Philadelphia/New Jersey area. Marcus eventually moved to Arizona and graduated from Arizona State University. He credits his mother and two brothers with providing a competitive but supportive environment which set him up for success. In his personal life, Marcus is a father of five and has eight grandchildren. He’s an avid lover of sports, particularly football, basketball and golf, and is a fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

Marcus credits three major companies that played a huge part in his development. The first company was ConocoPhillips where he served as a supply chain manager, managing the flow of petroleum products through the Kinder Morgan pipeline for the Northern California terminals.

It was in this role Marcus learned that communication and responsiveness was key: “If at any time either of the two were not followed, there were huge repercussions as it related to the Northern California terminals in having enough or too many products to meet the area gas stations volume demands.”

Marcus Palmer

The second company was General Electric (GE) where he served in various roles until he was promoted to RV Sales Support Specialist. It was during his time with GE that he was introduced to the RV industry and eventually became an Account Manager.

As Account Manager, Marcus was responsible for overseeing and maintaining RV dealership accounts and relationships while answering dealer’s questions related to their day-to-day operations. It was in the role as the RV Sales Support Specialist where he formed industry connections with individuals such as Bob Parish, the Vice President of Global Accounts for Wells Fargo Capital Finance and the RV Industry Association’s former Board Chair.

“I was very excited to get promoted into the role of RV Sales Support Manager where I had the pleasure of working directly with Bob,” Marcus says.  “I take great pride during that time because I learned a lot about the RV industry while working with him.”

After his time with GE, Marcus branched out into a leadership role with Huntington Distribution Finance, which was formally known as Twin City Financial Bank and acquired by Huntington Distribution Finance in 2020. The Huntington Distribution Finance team’s main objective is to seek and develop great working relationships with dealerships, OEMs, and associations in the RV marketplace.

Marcus adds: “The internal landscape of Huntington Distribution Finance consists of knowledgeable people in all aspects of Inventory Finance. That said, anyone that works directly with an Huntington Distribution Finance team member will be working with a tenured and knowledgeable person whose overall goal is to ensure all existing and future customers are given the highest level of customer service.”

In his current role as the RV Vertical Commercial Leader, Marcus oversees a sales team whose representatives are located across the United States and Canada. “The team cares and loves this industry just as much as I do,” he says. ” Their primary focus is on wholesale floor planning for RV dealers and OEMs. Simply put, dealers finance their inventory through Huntington Distribution Finance to hold on to cash for either future expansion, lot improvements, or other subjects that consists with running their business. When the dealer sells that inventory, they pay the unit off, and that concludes that transaction for the individual unit.”

He adds: “When the dealer wishes to add a replacement or looking to venture into a new line, the process starts again. So, our job is to keep exploring for more opportunities while maintaining the great relationships established with our existing customers. In today’s RV market space, there are a ton of lenders out there looking to do the same thing. It is our responsibility to prove why a dealer would want to trust and do business with our company.”

Additionally, Marcus serves as manufacturer liaison for Huntington Distribution Finance, which entails building and maintaining strong relationships with all RV manufacturer and association partners. “Right now, my main focus is to continue to make myself and my team even better in our current roles. Huntington has a great dealer base. We appreciate the relationships and the trust that they’ve given us in their business, and we want to expand on that. We know that there’s still more people that we need to connect with and have them believe in us. And that’s our focus.”

Grand Design RV Shines at ‘Extraordinary’ Hershey RV Show

MIDDLEBURY, Ind – Grand Design RV made a powerful impression at the 2024 Hershey RV Show, America’s largest RV event, with a strong showing across its full product lineup, according to a release. From Sept. 11-16, Grand Design showcased 47 units, including models from Momentum, Solitude, Influence, Reflection, Imagine, Transcend, Serenova, and Lineage product lines.

Solitude and Influence Product Manager, Logan McBride, listens to positive feedback from potential owners about his new interiors across the Solitude product line.

The turnout was “extraordinary,” the release continued, with heightened consumer interest and strong display traffic, solidifying Grand Design’s status as “a leader in the RV industry.”

“We knew going into Hershey that we had a lot to offer, but the sheer volume of interest and excitement from consumers really exceeded our expectations,” said Rob Groover, general manager for Solitude, Momentum, and Influence product lines. “For us, it’s not just about showcasing our units—it’s about creating memorable, meaningful experiences for our customers. At the end of the day, we want to connect with current and future owners on a personal level, and that’s exactly what we did.”

One of the standout elements of Grand Design’s presence at the show was the exclusive Virtual Reality (VR) experience. Designed to offer consumers a first-of-its-kind opportunity, the VR tool allowed visitors to explore various floorplans that were not physically on display at the show. This innovative feature was a massive hit, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback for its consumer-centric design and ease of use.

“The VR experience was about pushing boundaries,” continued Groover. “We wanted to give our customers something fresh—something that truly elevates their decision-making process. By providing a virtual walk- through of units that weren’t physically at the show, we ensured that every potential owner could see the full extent of our offerings. The response was phenomenal, and we’re excited to continue exploring new ways to innovate for our consumers.”

The Hershey RV Show also marked the debut of two exciting new product lines for Grand Design. The Serenova Travel Trailer, an upscale, lightweight travel trailer, wowed attendees with its innovative design and high-end features, making it a standout in the single-axle trailer segment.

Director of Marketing, Andrea Smith, engaging with consumers to better understand their shopping journey.

Additionally, Grand Design introduced the Lineage Series M, its latest motorized Class C model. The Lineage 25FW, built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4500 diesel cutaway chassis, features striking dark interior ceilings and a bold square design theme—reflected in the lights, door handles, and latches. The 25FW also includes a custom MORryde steel chassis conversion and is equipped with the Firefly multiplex system for enhanced control and convenience, making it one of the most innovative motorhomes in its class.

Beyond the excitement surrounding the VR feature, Grand Design’s commitment to customer-focused innovation was front and center. Engaging directly with consumers at Hershey gave the team invaluable insights, allowing the company to further refine designs and product features based on real-time feedback.

This iterative approach ensures that Grand Design’s future products not only meet but exceed consumer expectations.

“We’re in this for the long haul—for our customers and for the industry,” Groover emphasized. “Our goal is not just to meet expectations, but to exceed them every time. That’s what drives us to innovate and deliver exceptional products and experiences. The feedback we got from Hershey will help us improve even more as we continue setting the standard for quality and trust in the RV industry.”
