Final FROG Rally Underway for Outgoing President Bob Byrne

The 2024 Forest River Owners Group (FROG) International Rally is underway this week at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds and for Bob Byrne it’s very much a bittersweet affair.

This is the final FROG rally for Byrne as the club’s president, a position he has held for 13 years. Come November, Byrne and his wife Cindy will step aside. Rennie and Beth Roberts, who have been learning the ropes for a few months now, will be succeeding the Byrnes.

“We’re looking forward to the next chapter, but we are certainly going to miss the wonderful friendships we’ve made. We’ve had great adventures. The company has treated us wonderfully and we’re very grateful to Pete (Liegl, Forest River president) and the entire Forest River team for the opportunities we’ve had,” Byrne told RVBusiness.

The 2024 FROG Rally features about 380 coaches and 750 people – 40% of whom are first-timers – along with about 50 vendors, 65 seminars, eight tours around Amish country, a couple of nights of live entertainment, and, according to Byrne, “a lot of great opportunity to come here, renew old friendships, make new ones, learn about your RV, and just sharing friendship.”

Byrne was busy setting up for that night’s dinner banquet, but he took a few minutes to graciously reflect on his time as the FROG president.

“More than anything else, I’m going to miss the people,” he said. “We have made wonderful friendships. We’ve had great adventures with a lot of the members of FROG. We’ve had opportunities to travel extensively to work with a lot of the members if we’re not hosting a rally and helping others set up. I did an estimate the other day that, in the 13 years, we have probably either organized and hosted or helped others organize and host on FROG’s behalf somewhere upwards of 225 to 250 events, maybe a little over that.”

His thoughts then took him back to one of the very first events that took place after he became president, which was the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. in March of 2012.

“This was before we were online with our registrations. Everything was mailed in and out, and we planned on taking 25 RVs with us. We ended up taking 76,” he said. “We needed to have three buses. It was a little bit like herding cats, but it was a great start and we figured if we can pull this one off, we’re going to be okay.”

Lastly, Byrne also shared the first time he found out he was going to become the president of FROG.

“I was sitting in my boss’s office, Jeff Rowe (Forest River’s human resources director), filling out some paperwork, and this guy stepped into the doorway and he said to Jeff, ‘Have you had him measured yet for the spandex frog outfit?’ And I turned and said, ‘Any pattern that needs this much spandex ought to be illegal.’ And Jeff said, ‘Oh, there’s somebody I’d like you to meet. This is Pete. He’s the president of the company.’ So it was an auspicious start,” Byrne said with a laugh.

In fact, Byrne had high praise for Liegl and his support for FROG over the years.

“We are very appreciative to Pete and to all of his management team, but not only the managers, but up and down the line,” he said. “We have worked with so many of the customer service people, the service techs, the salespeople. You go out here on the grounds and you see all the service work that’s being done and all of the goodwill that’s being spread, building relationships between the customers and the company, and we are very grateful to have had an opportunity to be a part of that.”

As far as his successors – and with Beth Roberts busy setting out desserts at each table behind him – Byrne also had nothing but the highest expectations for the Roberts, a Delaware couple who have been RVing for about 40 years.

“They have been key members of the FROG team and the Rally team for the last 12 years,” Byrne said. “They have organized and hosted events on their own. They’ve helped us with some of our remote rallies, so they’re bringing a good, strong background. But most of all, most important in my mind, they are extremely respected by the folks who are key to the organization, leaders in a lot of the setup work. I think that’s going to serve them very well, and it’s a well-earned respect.”

Pullrite, Star brite, Meyer Among Aftermarket Award Winners

Bob Brammer, president of supplier Stromberg Carlson, left, received a Chairman’s Award from Aftermarket Committee Chairman John Tinghitella of RV Designer, right, for his efforts in sounding the alarm on the de minimis trade loophole negatively affecting domestic suppliers.

ORLANDO– The 2024 RV Aftermarket Awards took place during lunch on Wednesday, Aug. 14, during the annual event held this year at the Caribe Royale Resort and sponsored by AP Products.

Before the awards were announced, Samantha Rocci, director of federal affairs for the RV Industry Association (RVIA), updated attendees on PFAS chemicals and de minimis, two issues that are directly impacting companies in the RV industry. The association is hoping that de minimis legislation will be taken up by Congress in some form before the end of the year.

Bob Brammer, president of supplier Stromberg Carlson, was an early voice on the issue of de minimis and brought it to the attention of other suppliers and the association. Due to his work on bringing the topic to the forefront, John Tinghitella of RV Designer, who serves as chairman of the Aftermarket Committee, awarded Brammer the Chairman’s Award.

With nearly 200 attendees looking on, the RV Aftermarket Awards seek to honor and recognize individuals, suppliers and distributors, who are committed to excellence and growth in the aftermarket industry, as well as highlight the newest and most popular products available in the aftermarket industry. Here are the winners:

Accepting the award for Pulllrite were National Sales Manager Scott Later, left, and owner Randy Pulliam.

Product of the Year: OEX Series Hitches by Pullrite

The Product of the Year recognizes new products in the RV aftermarket industry that have entered the marketplace since the last conference. A panel of RV parts/accessories experts from leading RV dealerships and RV distributors evaluated 20 entries for this category, and consider innovation, value, usability among the criteria to determine the finalists and winner.

Scott Later said, “We’re very grateful for the award and excited about the OEX and its position in the marketplace. It fills a niche we felt was sorely lacking in the category: a light-weight hitch for direct mount to OE puck systems and the highest weight rating at 25,000 lbs. GVWR.”

Other product finalists were: Genesis Products REVIVE Wallboard Kit and Genesis Products REVIVE Ceiling Kit.

2024 Distributor of the Year: Meyer Distributing

The Distributor of the Year award recognizes the most outstanding distributor in the aftermarket segment, and is voted on by all suppliers. The supplier members seriously look at marketing materials, communication, inventory, loyalty and more to determine the finalists and winner.

Meyer Distributing is a leader in specialty products marketing and distribution. Through numerous strategically positioned warehousing facilities, Meyer serves thousands of customers nationwide via Meyer Logistics direct ship. All Meyer associates have but one goal: To improve our ability to offer the fastest, most flexible and most reliable service in the industry.

Other finalists were: Arrow Distributing and NTP-Stag.

Liz White of Star brite

Supplier of the Year: Star brite

The Suppler of the Year award recognizes the most outstanding supplier in the aftermarket segment, and is voted on by distributors. Distributors look at customer service staff, customer team fill rates, and the ability to measure products, among other criteria.

Liz White, Director of Sales at Star brite shared, “We are truly honored to receive the 2024 Supplier of the Year award. This recognition reflects our passionate team’s hard work and the trust our customers have placed in us. We would like to thank our customers for their support and look forward to continuing to exceed expectations in the future!

Other finalists were Blue Ox, Creative Products Group, and Genesis Products

Receiving the Award from Derema Group were, from left: Scott Couturier,  Shalet Wingo, Kurt Forsman, Chris Mele and Scott Wirkler.

Manufacturer Rep Group of the Year: Derema Group

The Rep Group of the Year recognizes the most outstanding representative group in the aftermarket segment and is judged by aftermarket distributors. Distributors look at the work ethic, customer service, product knowledge, training support, among other criteria.

Derema Group formed in  January of 2000 as the marine industry’s first and largest national Sales and Marketing Solution and recently recognized as a Top 14 “Most Innovative Company” by Soundings Trade Only, a trade magazine for the marine industry. Derema entered the RV market in 2018 with the same innovation and focus to become one of the RV industry’s top agencies. Derema Group understands the dynamics of the successful sale of products in each corresponding market channel.

President Kurt Forsman emphasized that this was a team award. “Derema Group is honored to receive this award.  Our team of 26 dedicated outside specialists works every day to support our brands, distributors, and dealers in bringing the best products to the market. This recognition is a testament to their unwavering commitment and hard work.”

Other finalists were Dealer Resource Group and Tom Manning & Associates.

The conference will conclude today with a third day of  meetings between distributors and suppliers.

Aftermarket Conference Focuses on ‘Selling an Experience’

ORLANDO, Fla. – While the RV Aftermarket Conference, taking place this week at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, focuses on aftermarket products, the theme of yesterday’s events included a reexamination of the sales funnel by keynote speaker Andrew Davis.

Hosted by the RV Industry Association (RVIA), the conference features suppliers and distributors meeting in one-on-one “appointment sessions” to pitch new products while taking advantage of key networking opportunities. In addition, attendees also will hear from thought-leaders on the state of the RV industry – including Davis.

In addressing the sales funnel, a concept developed in 1898 by St. Elmo Lewis, Davis pointed out that the consumer journey has changed quite a bit in the 126 years since. He also advocated for something he calls The Loyalty Loop, saying, “The sales process has changed, so change the way you think about how you sell.”

The key, he said, is to bring consumers into The Loyalty Loop, which is a series of “micro-encounters” that make you feel something, either bad or good. Of course, you want those encounters to be positive and personal, he added. You want potential customers to feel that they’re special and not just another cog in the sales machine.

Davis used Domino’s Pizza Tracker as an example of effectively bringing people into the loop by creating enthusiasm about the next step in the process. “What is your Pizza Tracker?” he asked. Moreover, it’s important to re-inspire what brought them to you in the first place, answer the question that triggered them to look into the product, remove any friction in the process (such as lengthy forms to fill out), and personalize the experience by introducing them to your team, for instance.

Ultimately, as Davis put it, “We don’t sell a product; we sell an experience and those micro-encounters along the way define their experience.”

Davis’ concepts were echoed in many of the subsequent product meetings held with industry manufacturers and distributors. Lippert’s Matt Clauss says that the consumer’s experience is enhanced by the effective display and explanation of products at retail.

“Consumers are walking in to investigate with something in their mind. What else can you sell them? Dealers need to be ready to have a wider conversation around more products and lean on the manufacturer experts who know how to talk about them with enthusiasm and excitement,” Clauss says. “The more their staff knows and understands what they have, the better they are able to talk at retail about those items.”

The conference continues through Thursday, with the 2024 Aftermarket Awards being announced on Wednesday. Check Thursday’s RVBusiness Daily News Feed for the winners and stay tuned for new product announcements from many of the conference participants over the coming weeks and months.

Fenech Foundation Pledges $500K to RV Learning Center

FAIRFAX, Va. – Staked by a $500,000 donation, the RV Dealership Employee Emergency Relief Program is a new joint initiative between the Ron & Lisa Fenech Family Foundation and the Mike Molino RV Learning Center. The initiative is designed to provide financial assistance to RV dealership employees experiencing hardship due to natural disasters and other catastrophic events that lead to major expense or loss of income.

Hardships that may qualify for assistance include immediate family health issues and catastrophic incidents such as damage due to natural disasters, home fires, or flooding. The program is expressly for all RV dealership employees. RV dealership owners/principals are not eligible.

“Our own family has seen first-hand how emergency financial assistance can make a big difference to families and individuals experiencing a health crisis or other catastrophic event,” said Ron Fenech, president and co-founder of Brinkley RV. “The RV business has been very good to me and my family. This program is a way for us to give something back to the industry.”

“Helping dealership employees is a core value of the RV Learning Center,” said RV Learning Center Chairman of the Board Jeff Pastore. “We thank Ron, and the Fenech family, for supporting dealership employees through this special emergency relief program that will provide some financial relief during difficult times.”
