U.S. manufacturing, employment rise in January

(Feb. 1, 2013) -- Activity in the US manufacturing sector expanded in Jan. 2013 at a faster pace than the previous month as evidenced by the ISM manufacturing index rising to 53.1 in the month from 50.2 in December. Jan. 2013 payroll employment rose by 157,000 in the month, which was slightly below market expectations of a 165,000 increase.
